Business life is demanding. Personal life is demanding. Many of us find ourselves walking a tightrope between trying to meet life’s growing demands and burning out. With decades of experience of balancing business demands with personal wellbeing here are some insights on staying in balance.
What is Burn Out?
Burnout is a state of total exhaustion. Very often, the term “burnout” is used to describe what is really fatigue, overwhelm, running on empty, stress.
It is the personal state when drive, motivation and the flame of spirit nestled deep inside are extinguished. When there is no longer inspiration.
So, if you are experiencing true burn out, perhaps it’s time to choose to be inspired once again.
Signs You Are Burnt Out
Burn Out affects people in different ways.
But, are you waking up and living through bad day after bad day, where no matter what you do, your effort seem futile? If you passionately care about your business, or personal life, but you feel drained, if deep, debilitating exhaustion has become your normal state, you could be experiencing burnout. Is now your time for self-care?
When every day becomes an uphill battle, when your efforts make no difference, it’s time to take a look inward to ask yourself what you really need.
Burnout is an opportunity to step on a different path and embark on a journey towards rejuvenation and rediscovery for a more balanced life.
Burnout can have physical, mental and emotional symptoms, yet often the solution is hidden from your view, yet when you find it, you may be surprised how simple it really was to find.
Physical Symptoms of Burnout
Symptoms of burn out starts in the most subtle way, revealing symptoms that are easy to ignore, yet can escalate. Signs and symptoms can include:
- Disrupted sleep
- Change of appetite
- Constantly tired
- Frequent colds or infections
- Headaches and aching body
You may experience any number of these symptoms on a frequent basis, but the physical symptoms are a manifestation of what’s going on deep inside you. These symptoms are a nudge encouraging you to make some changes to your life.
Mental Burn Out Symptoms
As burn out sets in, perhaps you become numb to physical symptoms, but you’ll notice a rise in self-doubt, foggy thinking. Your usual creativity may wane, you become emotionally detached and you find it hard to make decisions particularly if you feel you made the wrong decision last time.
When you are no longer aligned with who you really are, mental exhaustion requires gentle, supportive realignment of mental energies, but at a deeper “non-thinking” level. It is the time for reconnection and recalibration.
Emotional Exhaustion Symptoms
Physical symptom may be physically painful, but our deep emotions shoulder the underlying weight of burn out. Emotional exhaustion underpins every physical symptom and you may find yourself lost in a wilderness and a state of negativity.
Emotions are your messengers. Literally Energy in Motion – E-Motion, calling you to a need for a time of introspection that will guide you back to your pathway of authenticity and fulfilment. Discovering and being guided to embrace these signals can be the first step to rejuvenation.
How to Prevent Burn Out
We all can experience extreme tiredness at some point in our life especially when triggered by a crisis or acute episode.
Preventing burnout is an act of conscious living. The solution can be found in the daily cultivation of a life aligned with your purpose, joy and inner peace.
I acknowledge, reading these words may make sense and seem straight forward, but taking the practical steps can be a lot harder, especially the first step.
Consider resetting your boundaries. Say no when you need to recharge your battery. Find a fleeting moment of joy, prioritise your wellbeing and inner peace in a very meaningful way.
Find joy in the smallest of things. Embrace the moment of connection and conversation. Smile. Reconnect with nature – even in the smallest of ways.
