We were sold the myth that power is volume and velocity with more noise, faster decisions and hard edges. In reality, power is (and always has been) a dynamic flow of energy that moves through us.
Power Is Not Force
Power is the capacity to direct or redirect energy in yourself, your team, in a conversation so you move forward. Power is always knowing what to say, buy yourself time, direct the outcome of a conversation and avoid “The Freeze”.
Sometimes this freeze happens in high-stakes scenarios, when we’re pitching for the perfect client or price increase. The moment arrives and you know what to say, but nothing comes out. The words get stuck.
By the time women are back in their bodies, the conversation has shifted or worse still somehow they’ve agreed to something less favourable than what they really wanted.
But, the freeze happens in low stake scenarios too. When the barista asks if you’re doing anything nice this weekend. Speechlessness sets in.
Stepping Into Your Power
You already hold the magic key, so let’s turn the spotlight on your success.
Most women can relate to the moment of freeze. For some it is engrained on their psyche and now they never know when it will turn up. This can cause a deep hidden fear and an erosion of confidence even in the most capable of women.
Your first task is to notice your freeze moments, then next time be ready with your new superpower.
Your Superpower
This superpower is guaranteed to unfreeze you: ask a question.
Simple and it works for two reasons:
First, when you ask a question you buy yourself time as you wait for the answer. It may only be a brief moment.
Second, you turn the attention spotlight back on the other person. They have to pay attention to themselves in order to give you the answer.
This is how you direct the power dynamic to where you want the energy and the conversation to flow.
To break the freeze and take control direct your energy and attention outwards and theirs will move inwards.
